A PLAQUE to celebrate an ‘exceptional’ scientist will be pinned to the wall of a house on Britain’s fourth most picturesque street – if plans are given the thumbs-up by Oxford City Council.
Oxford’s New College Lane was named one of the country’s prettiest streets in Google awards, and now if the council give the plans the green-light, astronomy scientist Edmond Halley will be commemorated there indefinitely.
As it is, a timber memorial for him is stuck on the front door of the house he used to live in – 300 years ago – whilst writing some of his most ‘significant work’ – but the spelling of his name is wrong and is written as 'Edmund' instead of 'Edmond' so this will be corrected on the new strong engraved plaque.
Planners from New College said: "The design approach is a thoughtful, elegant and simple approach'.
If all goes to plan then the new plaque, which will be put on the wall of number 6 to 7, will say 'Edmond Halley 1656 - 1742' in grey painted lettering and carving.
