SCHOOL children from Oxford are planning to take part in a 'global general strike' over climate, as young environmental activism ramps up.
Local pupils are set to demonstrate again on Friday, July 19, in the latest in a series of walkouts attempting to draw attention to the climate crisis - and have vowed to continue until the government takes action.

But it is the September 20 'strike', calling on adults to join students, which is drawing more attention.
Oxford Youth Climate Action organiser Emma 'EJ' Fawcett said: "It's time to show that it’s not just school children who will fight to survive."

She added that next week's event is not a strike for many since it is during school holidays, but said they 'want to show the world that we care' regardless, and went on: "Climate change will end life as we know it and people need to wake up, humans are endangered too.
"Declaring a climate emergency is not enough, we won’t stop striking until the government follows through with action."

Thousands of school students have come to Bonn Square during five demonstrations that have become a monthly fixture in Oxford since February, when a global movement among young people – sparked by Swedish teen Greta Thunberg – first hit the city.
Previous events have seen thousands of primary, junior, secondary, college, university students and parents and teachers on the streets, armed with placards and slogans.
A similar demonstration is also planned for August 16.
