PROPOSED changes to Oxford's busy High Street will go ahead after they were given permission by the county council.

A new 30m loading bay will be opened up outside the Covered Market and a loading bay outside the Mitre pub will be removed.

The county council's cabinet member for environment Yvonne Constance allowed the measures to the west end of High Street at a meeting on Thursday at County Hall in Oxford.

She also allowed blue badge parking currently on High Street to be moved to the east of Turl Street.

Mrs Constance also approved a measure that will ban loading in High Street and St Aldates from 7.30am to 9.30am and from 4pm until 6.30pm every day.

A two-car car taxi rank will also be situated in High Street.

Mrs Constance also allowed changes to the A40, Witney Road and Shilton Road in Burford.

A signalled pedestrian crossing on the A40 will be built about 150m west of the junction with Shilton Road.

As part of other traffic calming measures, six sets of speed cushions will be placed along the Shilton Road.

The 30mph limit on that road will also be extended by 170m.

The central reservation gap at the A40 junction near the former Nielsen's site in Oxford will also be closed.
