CYCLISTS battled wind and rain to muddle through and complete a gruelling 500-mile ride in memory of one little boy.

Every mile that whizzed beneath the riders tyres on the #TOO500 fundraiser this past week was dedicated to Oscar Cole.

Thinking of Oscar charity supported took on 500 miles, over five days, travelling between six children's hospital, and one youngster's legacy at the centre of it all.

Oscar died suddenly, age one,after contracting Encephalitis, a rare condition that causes inflammation of the brain. He died at the Oxford Children’s Hospital on June 19, 2014.

Five years on his family have set up the Thinking of Oscar charity and have raised thousands towards supporting children's healthcare.

Parents Hannah and David Cole decided this year, five years on, to launch a major fundraising bid of enlisting cyclists to take on the 500-mile ride.

Together they set off on June 12 alongside the other riders and after the incredible feat sailed through to the finish line at Blenheim Palace on Sunday.

Mrs Cole, of Thinking of Oscar, said: “It’s been a big challenge, but the support has been overwhelming. The participants were incredible and a huge thank you goes to everyone who has supported the event.

"Our determination to improve child healthcare via technological advancements kept us going. Hopefully this event has helped improve awareness of the need for increased support for child healthcare.”

Mr Cole added: “It an incredibly emotional journey. We’ve done this to try and help as many children as possible who find themselves requiring healthcare.

"Thank you to everyone who has supported #TOO500 it has been very uplifting, and we now need to capture the support and use it to help drive positive change."

Riders took on either the whole 500-miles during the five-day stint, which started from Oxford Children's Hospital, or various 100-mile legs between hospitals.

Among those taking part was Oxford United legend, and Oxford United in the Community patron, James Constable.

He said: "Children healthcare is an issue close to my heart and I was delighted to help.

"It was a real challenge and tougher than anything I have done in sport, but everyone supported each other, and we get over the line as a group.

"Thinking of Oscar is such a special charity and the work it is doing is so important."

The challenge has so far raised more than £90,000 and hopes to push that up to £500,000 to support a number of children's hospitals.
