DOG-owners showed off their pets at the Oxford Pride Dog show on Sunday.

Dogs had a chance of winning in six categories at the event held at Oxford Castle, which has been running for three years.

Categories included best trick, most butch, prettiest bitch, waggiest tail, best dressed, owner look-a-like, dog you’d like to take home, public choice and judge’s choice.

Organised by domestic cleaning and dog walking company, Pinny and Paws, as well as LGBTI+ charity, Oxford Pride, people could enter their dog into the competition at £2.

Debbie Brixey, chair of Oxford Pride, said there was a great turnout.

She said: “It was very good and probably the busiest dog show we’ve ever held. Lots of people came, not just those who entered but people came to watch too. It was very well attended.

“The show was open to anyone and it was intergenerational so people of all ages came, as well as people who had no experience with Oxford Pride and people who had been to our events before.”

The dog show used to be part of Pride Day but now it is a separate event.

Ms Brixey said: “Lots of people entered their dogs into the categories. We particularly enjoyed the waggiest tail and best dressed categories because people love seeing dogs in outfits - it’s good fun and there’s always lots of smiles.”

All proceeds went to Oxford Pride which managed to raise £200 from the event which Ms Brixey says will help to ensure future events remain free for people to attend.

Earlier this year the charity held a dog walk which was also successful.

Lady B, an Oxfordshire based Drag Queen, hosted the dog show and has done for the past two years.

Ms Brixey said the crowd enjoyed her performance as she also sang at the show.

She said: “Lady B sang while the dogs got dressed and I think everyone loved a good sing-song in the middle of the show.”

Oxford Pride celebrations take place this Saturday and Ms Brixey invites everyone to come down to the parade which will start at Radcliffe Square and travel through the city to Oxford Castle Quarter.

There will be stalls, DJs, dancing and face painting.

One of the stalls will be hosted by Oxfordshire Mental Health Partnership (OMHP) where people can talk to staff and volunteers about how it helps people who have mental health conditions.

OMHP chairman Dan Knowles, who is also the CEO of Oxfordshire Mind, said: “I’m delighted that Oxfordshire Mental Health Partnership will be hosting it’s biggest ever stand this year and we look forward to taking part."
