A MAN out celebrating becoming a father for the first time ended his night out by glassing a woman to the head and punching a bouncer.

Thug Charlie Paterson left one of his victims permanently scarred after the shocking violence at the Cow and Creek pub, New Road, Oxford, on March 3.

The 32-year old of Oxford Road, Oxford, had already admitted wounding and assault by beating.

Oxford Crown Court heard at his sentencing hearing yesterday how Paterson had been out celebrating the news his partner was due to have a baby on the night of the double attack.

While at the city centre pub an 'altercation' started, the court heard, involving Paterson's sister and his eventual first victim.

While on the dancefloor the fight escalated which eventually saw Paterson lunge towards his victim's head while holding a glass.

Eye-witnesses said Paterson took a 'massive swing' at the woman with the 'long pint glass', and the court heard she later needed stitching and was left scarred.

A bouncer then rushed on the scene and removed Paterson from the pub.

While outside, the court heard, Paterson - continuing to be aggressive - then lamped the bouncer hard to his jaw, causing minor injuries.

While the first victim was taken to hospital Paterson was arrested and at interview he admitted the violence but said he was trying to help his sister.

A victim personal statement summarised to the court revealed how the first victim had worked as a model and the ordeal would leave pursuing that profession impossible.

The court also heard at yesterday's hearing how Paterson had only been released on licence nine months before the attack, putting him in breach of his licence.

He also has a string of previous convictions, including numerous assaults and cases of violence.

In mitigation at the hearing his defence barrister Jacob Bindman said that his client was sorry for what he had done.

He said: "His explanation is that he was out celebrating his child's pending birth with his partner who sits in court today.

"He obviously had been drinking and he is extremely sorry for that because it did lead to a series of lapses of judgement."

He added that violence was not pre-mediated.

Sentencing, Judge Maria Lamb said: "The ongoing effects on your victim are in my view seriously aggravating.

"This was in a public place and you were in drink. The least sentence I can impose in respect of the wounding is one of three years."

She added that in light of his guilty plea a discount to the final tally could be afforded.

Paterson was jailed for a total of 31 months and must pay a statutory victim surcharge.
