THE owner of Oxford's newest burger bar has given it a Seven Deadly Sins theme.

Former Cherwell School boy Sami Mahfouz put the finishing touches to his new American-style diner Glut this week.

Striking artwork with a sins theme now covers the walls of the George Street eatery which opens tomorrow at noon.

And, while he wants customers to come back for second helpings, he insists he and his team are not greedy and says dishes are reasonably priced.

The 24-year-old from Jericho is pledging to use local ingredients and make every single burger, dish and sauce from scratch.

It’s a tall order but Mr Mahfouz is determined to take on the chains and beat them at their own game.

After snapping up the lease of the premises previously occupied by chains Giraffe and then Thali, the young entrepreneur said: “It’s been a big investment and we have worked hard to get the restaurant looking how we want it and now we are ready to open.

“I know it’s a competitive market here in George Street but I honestly think we can offer something different to the chains - all our suppliers are local including the Natural Bread company in Botley and Aldens butchers.

“Our dishes are reasonably priced because we want to welcome everyone - students, families and tourists.

“Hamburgers cost £7, fries £2.50 and there are free refills on the drinks menu.”

Mr Mahfouz, who took a degree in economics, said he hoped staff at his former school would be proud of his achievements so far.

“One of my teachers has already dropped in to wish us all the best,” he revealed.

“I remembering asking lots of questions in my economics lessons - staff at the school were always so supportive and I hope they are pleased I am opening this restaurant.”

Family and friends gathered last week to test the menu, which features shredded chicken, and artichoke and spinach crockpots, costing £5.

Vegans are also catered for - the plant burger costs £8.50 while the dirty plant burger costs £9.50.

As well as Budweiser beer - £4.20 a pint - the bar offers cocktails for £7.50 and wines.

Mr Mahfouz is well aware that there is competition right on his doorstep in the shape of Nando’s and American-inspired chain diner Byron but this has not put him off.

He added: “There's competition in George Street and at the Westgate but we will do things differently and our reasonable pricing should reap the rewards.”

Mr Mahfouz has worked in the hospitality trade since the age of 12 as his father Mimo runs a hotel in Oxford. He added: “My parents are supportive but this is something I have had to do myself.”

Japanese restaurant Yo! Sushi in George Street also closed earlier this year, along with Pint Shop pub. But West Berkshire Brewery has invested £70,000 in a revamp of The Grapes opposite the New Theatre and it reopened last week.

Mr Mahfouz said Glut’s opening hours would be noon to midnight seven days a week.
