MEN threatened each other with weapons as they brawled in a 'dangerous' disused quarry in South Oxfordshire.

Thames Valley Police said an 'altercation' broke out between two groups of men at the former cement works in Chinnor on Easter Sunday, near Thame.

The force said 'weapons were used by both groups to threaten each other', at about 4.30pm, but did not specify what kind of weapons.

Officers believe the men knew each other and said both groups then left the quarry, which is not open to the public.

One group then veered off the road in a van after leaving the scene, colliding with a grass verge, before getting into another vehicle and driving off.

Appealing for witnesses today, the force added: "It is believed that members from one of the groups were driving a white Peugeot van that came off the road and hit a grass verge on Chinnor Hill at around 4.55pm.

"The occupants of the van then got into another vehicle which was driven away."

Police said no-one was reported injured, but they are keen to speak to anyone who noticed anything suspicious or who saw the Peugeot come off the road.

Investigating officer PC Matthew Huard, based at Thame police station, said: "I would like to remind residents that the quarry is not open to the public and is very dangerous."

Appealing for information, he added: "We are appealing for anyone who may have witnessed this incident or saw anything suspicious in the area of the quarry and the Ridgeway between the hours of 4pm and 7pm on Easter Sunday to please come forward.

"In particular I would like to hear from anyone who witnessed the incident involving the white Peugeot at around 4.55pm on Chinnor Hill or has dash-cam footage of the incident."

The force is investigating public disorder.

In previous years police have warned people not to swim in the lake at the former quarry, after it became a popular hang-out for young people during warm weather.
