Mother’s Day is almost here for another year, but for some people, the special day can be a lot harder to bear.

For the Motherless, the day of celebration can be a stark reminder of their mums who are no longer here and can be a difficult day for them to endure.

National charity Cruse Bereavement Care, which has a branch in Oxford, supports people who are grieving their loved ones and has given some tips on how people can cope.

These include:

  • Having a quiet day on your own or marking the day in a special way
  • Writing a card to your mum sharing your thoughts and feelings
  • Having a simple act of memorial such as lighting a candle, planting a flower in your garden or visiting the final resting place of your mum.
  • Talking to someone who is not family or a friend may help people get through the day

The charity will be holding a Facebook Live event today at 3pm which will allow people who have lost their mothers to ask experienced bereavement supporters questions about bereavement and grief, as well as discuss what coping strategies might work for you on Mother’s Day.

Michelle Tunstall, 21, from Banbury, lost her mum last year, and this Sunday will be the first Mother's Day without her.

She said: “I’m not sure if I'm ready or how I’m going to react or get through it. But I definitely would say spend it with your loved ones and do something special to dedicate it to your mum like putting flowers on their grave or lighting lanterns with messages.

"It's important to remember that everyone has different timeframes for grieving. Some take years and some take months. But overall be sensitive to the person and don’t compare yourself to another persons grieving journey."

GreenAcres Chiltern cemetery and ceremonial park will also be supporting those who are struggling at this time of the year.

The park near High Wycombe will be holding a Mother’s Day event where families can listen to live music, enjoy refreshments and join together in the symbolic lighting of a candle for their mum.

Organisers say the event is planned with great care, ensuring that they are able to offer the opportunity for families to remember their mums in a safe space with others who also wish to remember and reflect.

Park Manager Marisa Isaacs said: “We are so pleased that we are able to offer our families and local community such a special event on Mother’s Day.

“The ambience of Chiltern’s woodland is positively soothing for the soul and such a perfect setting to reflect on memories we hold of our cherished loved ones.”
