PLANS to modernise a 14th Century church in Bloxham are causing arguments amongst people in the area.

St Mary’s Church could get refurbished with a kitchen, toilet facilities, more flexible and comfortable seating, new heating and enhanced audio-visual facilities.

In particular, the plan to remove pews and replace them with chairs hasn't gone down too well.

One commenter said that if people wanted 'coffee and a comfy seat' they should go to a cafe or local pub.

Another said: "Please say ikea chairs are a joke. 'Save the pews'."

The Parochial Church Council has proposed the changes to enhance the role of the church - which is the largest indoor space in the village - as a community hub.

But not everyone seems to support the plans.

Lianne Heath said on the Bloxham Broadsheet Facebook Page: “We’re coerced into thinking change is good, it has to happen or you’re not moving with the times, but not all change is for the better.

“There are enough community spaces in Bloxham so leave the Church as it is - beautifully connecting the past, present and future of the people of this village.”

Vonny Durrant commented: “The church is old and has lots of history, and that’s what makes it so special. If you want a community centre, build one somewhere else but leave Bloxham church as it is.”

Other people argue that a change is good and that the church is in desperate need of an update.

John Clegg said: "The new plan will allow the church a new vibrancy with more people coming in to use the space. Each generation makes changes that last for hundreds of years. The changes fit the way that generation need to use the building."

A consultation will soon be underway.
