More than 70 shoplifting offences in and around the Westgate Centre are being investigated by Thames Valley Police, according to Home Office data.

There were 150 crimes in and around the Westgate Centre between January and December and these included 73 shoplifting offences, 24 violence and sexual offences, 24 other theft, nine theft from person offences, six drugs offences and five bike thefts.

There are also three violent and sexual crimes mapped for month in the area although no details are provided.

Of the five shoplifting offences the data says three of the alleged thefts are still under investigation while one is awaiting a court outcome and for another there is no suspect.

Two of the more serious alleged offences are under investigation while the third says police have been unable to prosecute a suspect.

In Oxford central, which covers a much wider area, including the city centre, Abingdon Road, North Hinksey and New Hinksey, there were 392 crimes between January and December.

The Westgate Centre opened in October 2017 following a £440m revamp and features a John Lewis department store, more than 100 new shops and restaurants on a rooftop terrace.

On March 7, a 17-year-old boy and a 25-year-old man, both from Oxford, were arrested in connection with a knifepoint robbery which took place at Paradise Square just behind the Westgate Centre earlier in the day.

Thames Valley Police said a boy and a man have been charged with robbery at knifepoint, in what is the latest incident involving knives around the city.

Paradise Square is just behind the popular shopping centre.

Last summer police officers discovered a cache of knives and drugs syringes in a park next to Paradise Square.

The Westgate Centre is owned by Land Securities.

A spokesman has been approached for a comment.
