INFRASTRUCTURE is the key to ensuring thousands of new homes planned for Abingdon are a success, according to Oxford Mail readers.

In an online poll today we asked people's thoughts on more than 1,000 new homes planned for the town following dozens of concerns raised by a first look at a major new estate of 425 homes in North Abingdon.

Of 314 who responded, 33 per cent agreed on the need for new houses but that it would only work if roads, schools and other community facilities were improved.

The answer narrowly beat the view that too many houses are planned for the town (32 per cent). Housing needing to be affordable came third on 23 per cent, while those wholly satisfied with the level of properties planned was 12 per cent.

The new development marks the first phase of a 900-home scheme off Dunmore Road.

It will join 200 homes approved for land off Dunmore Road and Wootton Road, on the other side of Tilsley Park.

People were given the chance to look at the plans and quiz developer David Wilson Homes, which will build the new estate with Barratt, at a public exhibition last week.

Worries over how roads would cope was one of the most common complaints among attendees and readers.

On the Oxford Mail Facebook page David Cameron-Young wrote the scheme was 'badly thought out' adding: "Put in the infrastructure first, ie the full junction at Abingdon North, and arrange entry and exit from the estate not onto Dunmore Road, which is already heavily congested at rush hour."

A long-awaited 'diamond interchange' on the A34 at Lodge Hill interchange to ease traffic near the site is currently due to be constructed by the end of 2020, according to Oxfordshire County Council's website.

Another user, under the name abingdon resident, said GP surgeries would not be able to meet demand from the new estate and the town had been 'let down' before by developers failing to provide promised infrastructure.

A new primary school, GP surgery, community hub, care home and sports pitches were included in the outline approval for the 900 homes but are not part of this first phase.

A formal planning application for the 425 homes is expected to go in next month.
