However a jury found him guilty by unanimous verdict.
The 38-year-old victim has been left permanently scarred.
Following the sentencing investigating officer, Detective Constable James Macaro of Force CID in Oxford said he was pleased to see the 27-year-old jailed.
He said: “The injury was severe and resulted in a large portion of the victim’s cheek being torn off.
“It is the worst injury I have ever seen in my career with the police.
“The victim required surgery and will be scarred for life."
One witness of the assault described a piece of flesh flying across the dance floor leaving while the sentencing judge labelled the injury 'horrific'.
DC Macaro added: “I am pleased the jury found Samuelson guilty and he has now been jailed for a significant period.
“This case demonstrates Thames Valley Police’s commitment to bringing violent offenders to justice.”
