AN investigation into the cause of a house fire which killed an elderly woman is ongoing, according to police.

Officers could still be seen outside the home in Littleworth near Faringdon yesterday following the fatal blaze on Monday evening.

Fire crews rushed into the smoke-filled property and were able to pull the woman, who is aged in her 80s, from the building.

However, despite efforts by an off duty doctor and firefighters to resuscitate her, the woman died.

Her next of kin have been informed.

The two-storey house on the main road through the village suffered significant smoke and heat damage according to the fire service.

Thames Valley Police are now leading the investigation.

A police spokesman said: "Thames Valley Police officers were called on Monday at about 5.55pm following reports of a fire at a house in Littleworth, Faringdon.

"Officers attended the scene along with the fire and ambulance service.

"Sadly, a woman aged in her eighties was found dead at the scene.

"Her next of kin have been informed.

"Officers are working to establish the cause of the fire and a scene watch is currently in place."
