AN ELDERLY woman has died in a house fire despite the desperate attempts of emergency services to save her.
Fire crews were called to the home in the village of Littleworth near Faringdon at around 5.30pm on Monday afternoon but could not locate the home owner.
Firefighters raced into the smoke-filled house and were able to pull the woman from the building.
An off duty doctor worked with medically trained fire fighters to give her emergency medical treatment at the scene however she later died.
An investigation is currently ongoing to identify the cause of the fire.
Watch manager Dave Arlott from Faringdon Fire Station said: “This has been a tragic incident in a small community.
"Our thoughts and condolences go out to the family and friends of the deceased.
"The cause of the fire is still being investigated but I would like to emphasise the importance of fire safety in the home and to always check that smoke alarms are fitted and working properly”

Oxfordshire county councillor for Faringdon Judith Heathcoat said: “On behalf of the Fire & Rescue Service, I offer our heartfelt sympathies and condolences to the friends and family of the victim.
"I would also like to pass on my personal thanks and sincere gratitude to all of the Emergency Services who attended this tragic incident.”
