OXFORD City Council has become the third council in the country to adopt a definition of Islamophobia approved by politicians.

It accepted the All-Party Parliamentary Group definition of Islamophobia last month.

It had been proposed by Cowley Marsh Labour councillor Lubna Arshad and seconded by Jamila Azad, who represents the party in the St Clement's ward.

Ms Arshad said: "Recent data published by the Home Office in the annual report on hate crime shows that over half – 52 per cent – of religious hate crime victims are Muslims."

Other councils to have adopted the definition are both in London – Redbridge and Newham.

Tom Hayes, the city council's executive board member for Safer and Greener Environment, said: "No city should have to experience hate crime, yet Oxford does, in common with many other cities. Oxford should be a place for everyone."
