Mr Riddell said it was ‘always a possibility’ that the man could try the same thing again.
He added: “That is why we are putting a lot of resources into identifying the offender and arresting him.”
The chief inspector said: “We think the intruder left by a rear door and we think the intruder entered by an insecure window at the rear of the property.
“One of the key messages is for people to keep their houses secure - their windows and their doors locked, even when they are in during the evenings.
“We had an extensive response when we were called, which included a full forensic examination of the address.
"It was quite a traumatic incident for the victim so she is being supported by specially trained officers.”
Mr Riddell added that detectives were now working on a number of leads.
He added: “Any CCTV or dash-cam footage would be helpful to us.”
The suspect is described as being Asian and in his twenties or thirties. H e is short, of slim build, with very short, dark hair, and is likely to be from the local area.
Anyone with information should call police on 101, quoting reference 43190042120.
