A WOMAN is in hospital in a 'stable condition' after being pulled from the River Thames this lunchtime.
Police closed Folly Bridge due to the 'fear for welfare' incident earlier.
Officers arrived on the scene and confirmed a woman was in the water, with fire crews arriving to assist in pulling the stricken woman out.
However, an Oxfordshire Fire and Rescue spokesman said police officers managed to rescue the woman before fire crews arrived.
Police closed the bridge to traffic and pedestrians, but it has since been reopened.
Spokeswoman Louisa Maher said: "Thames Valley Police was called at around 1.35pm to a fear for welfare incident at Folly Bridge in Oxford.
"After being recovered from the river, a woman was taken to hospital where she remains in a stable condition."
A stretcher was seen being taken down to the riverside at about 1.50pm.
Emergency services have not confirmed her age of the woman involved.
A spokeswoman for South Central Ambulance Service confirmed paramedics had been called to the bridge at 13.34pm with reports a woman had fallen into the water.
An ambulance officer, ambulance crew and critical care car were sent to the scene and the woman has been taken to the John Radcliffe Hospital.
