A CENTURY on from The Armistice, communities across Oxfordshire are gathering at war memorials today to remember the fallen.

Reporter Andy Ffrench runs through the major ceremonies taking place around the county.

In Oxford today (Sunday) residents joined Lord Mayor Colin Cook to mark the centenary of Armistice Day at the Remembrance service in St Giles where wreaths were laid on the war memorial.

Troops from around Oxfordshire gathered from 10am at the junction of Beaumont Street and St Giles, then marched up St Giles followed by the civic procession departing from St John’s College at 10.30am.

The service, was led by the interim City Rector and daughter of running legend Sir Roger Bannister, The Rev Charlotte Bannister-Parker.

  • A Turning the Pages ceremony, in which names of fallen soldiers from the First World War will be read out, will take place as part of Evensong at 6pm at Christ Church Cathedral this evening.
  • There will also be a service at the cathedral at 2.45pm today for young people to reflect on the consequences of the Great War.
  • Abingdon: The Act of Remembrance will take place at the war memorial today at 11am, following a service in St Helen’s Church at 10am.
  • Didcot: The Remembrance Sunday procession starts at Edinburgh Drive at 2.30pm before heading to the town’s war memorial.
  • Wantage: The service will take place at 11am at St Peter and St Paul Church.
  • Grove: As usual the village will hold two ceremonies, a service at the parish church in Main Street from 10am, and a second at the Denchworth Road Cemetery from 2.30pm.
  • Wallingford: The service takes place in the Market Place from 10.45am and there will be a flypast of helicopters from RAF Benson.
  • Witney: From about 10.40am today there will be a parade and service at the war memorial on Church Green and a service afterwards at St Mary’s Church.
  • Bicester: The Sunday service will take place at St Edburg’s Church at 11am, with wreaths laid at the war memorial.
  • Faringdon: A parade will leave the Corn Exchange at 9.30am leading to a service at All Saints’ Church at 10am.
  • Carterton: The Sunday Remembrance service will start at 9.45am at St John’s Church, Burford Road, followed by the parade to the memorial in Alvescot Road.
  • Burford: A service at the war memorial tomorrow will take place at 10.45am.
  • Kidlington: A service from 10am at St Mary’s Church will be followed by wreath laying at the war memorial.
  • Yarnton: A new war memorial is being unveiled, with the service taking place at 11am
  • Oxford United have planting a tree at their new Horspath training ground to remember those who gave their lives during the First World War
  • Oxford Rugby Club are today playing against Brookes University II in an Oxfordshire Shield match at the North Hinksey Lane ground at 2pm. The club will commemorate the loss of 18 Oxfordshire Nomads players during the conflict.
