MAZDA'S new Mazda2 range of five-door hatchbacks has gone on sale offering a simplified three-model line-up.

They come with a choice of three petrol powertrains and three equipment levels (TS, TS2 and Sport) priced from £8,499 on-the-road.

Mazda is confident that the car will prove to be so popular that its small car sales will triple during 2008 to 12,000 units as the sporty appeal of this new model increases sales by 300 per cent. The new Mazda2 is 100kg lighter than its predecessor and Mazda has kept the weight of the car under 1,000kg, which reduces fuel consumption by up to 15 per cent and ensures agile handling characteristics.

Mazda UK's marketing director, Mark Cameron, said: "From a styling perspective I'm certain this car has a class-leading sporty appearance.

"It is also a car with real substance, introducing elements with particular appeal to younger buyers. While styling is one of the most important factors in the buying process, consumers are also aware of environmental issues and will appreciate this model's lightweight construction, increased fuel economy and reduced CO2 impact - while delivering an entertaining driving experience coupled with Mazda's renowned Japanese build-quality and reliability."

Mazda is focusing on retail sales with new Mazda2 and that has led the carmaker to deliberately keep the line-up simple.

Standard equipment on the 1.3-litre, 75 horsepower Mazda2 TS includes 15-inch steel wheels, anti-lock brakes, driver and passenger front airbags, remote central locking with deadlocks, electric front windows, driver seat-height adjust, CD radio with auxiliary jack and two speakers, alarm and immobiliser and heated door mirrors.
