A SPATE of brutal and sustained vandal attacks on a bowls club has left angry members facing a clean-up bill in the hundreds of pounds.

Thugs have launched a string of seemingly mindless attacks on the changing rooms at West Oxford Bowls Club, kicking or punching holes in the walls, smashing windows and mirrors and throwing debris across the floor.

Tins of paint were also thrown around the women’s changing room and across the footpath at the club to the rear of the West Oxford Community Centre in Botley Road.

Club secretary Andy Webber revealed the group had been the victim of three separate attacks over the past week but said the latest, which happened on Sunday night, was by far the most savage.

He said: “We’ve got no idea who did it or why anyone would want to do it – we haven’t upset anyone that I know of.

“Myself and the other members, we just can’t understand why someone would want to do this.

“We’re just a group of pensioners who want to play bowls.”

The first incident last week saw someone try to force their way into the club house, but on that occasion the locks held.

The vandals, however, did make their way into the changing rooms and caused minor damage.

During the second attack between Wednesday and Saturday last week, the changing rooms were again broken into and the wooden panels on the walls were battered in.

After that occasion, Mr Webber penned a note in the hope of reasoning with their anonymous adversaries.

“We are doing our best to run a bowls club and you are doing your best to ruin it,” part of the note read.

However, members then discovered a scene of yet more carnage following the third incident overnight on Sunday evening.

Mr Webber said: “After the second one we contacted the police and crime scene officers came down.

“We just can’t believe it.

“They’ve been using the back of the club as a toilet.

“We have never had this sort of thing – such vandalism.

“We are a small club and at the end of the day we have to put this right.

“I would imagine they’ve done about £400 to £500 worth of damage but that money could be spent on something else.”

Police are currently investigating the incident.
