Who remembers the Blue Js?

They were one of nine bands which featured in the regional final of a beat contest organised by Oxfam at the Forum in High Street, Oxford, in 1964.

The Oxford group - Jimmy James, David Berbert, Alan Haynes, David Bradley and Ken Newport - just failed to get through to the national final of the competition in London.

They finished second to the Vibros - we're not sure where they came from.

Oxford Mail writer Roger James, who covered the event, made no comment about the Blue Js' performance.

But he said the Vibros had "surprised the cynical by coming up with some swinging, tuneful songs, and a pretty girl singer in gold trousers - my stage name is Vicky' - who sang like sugar-candy".

Among the judges were Shadows guitarist Jet Harris and his singer girlfriend Billie Davis, who drove to Oxford from London after appearing on TV's Ready, Steady Go pop show earlier in the evening.
