STUDENTS donned their glad rags for a good cause in March 1986.
Sixth formers at Fitzharrys school, Abingdon, held their first rag week that month to raise money for Sir Michael Sobell House in Oxford, as it was then known.
The 80-plus teenagers were each fined for whatever item of clothing they turned up to school in – but they had to pay double to wear normal school uniform.
Unsurprisingly, most students got into the party spirit and opted for fancy dress, which only carried a 25p fine.
The sixth form had previously held a silly hats day for charity but knocked that idea on the head for a full week of events.
Rag weeks have become commonplace at many universities, with students encouraged to participate in several crazy activities to raise money for a good cause.
