TO mark Cycle to Work Day we are asking readers how often they commute to work by bike.
New signs proclaiming Oxford as a ‘cycling city’ were installed on all 11 roads entering the city centre last year but for many the city's roads are still seen as too dangerous for cyclists.
Last month the National Infrastructure Commission called for the government to invest £150 million to improve cycling infrastructure in and around Oxford.
The report revealed that Oxford is surpassed only by Cambridge for the proportion of commuter journeys - around a quarter- conducted on bikes within the city.
Under its ‘Park and Pedal’ initiative, the City Council has put in 70 cycle parking spaces at Redbridge Park and Ride and 40 spaces at Seacourt Park and Ride to encourage ‘last mile’ and ‘first mile’ cycling by motorists using the city’s park and rides.
Councillor Louise Upton, board member for Healthy Oxford, said: “We are very proud that Oxford is a cycling city and we are keen to encourage more residents to cycle to and from work.
"Encouraging people to cycle to work instead of driving will help to improve our air quality levels, reduce congestion and encourage a healthy and active lifestyle.
“Currently, 25 per cent of all commuter journeys in Oxford are conducted on bikes.
"If you have wanted an excuse to cycle to work, why not use Cycle to Work Day as an opportunity - give it a try, either on your own or with a friend.”
