MARSTON has been one of the areas hardest hit by pub closures in recent years.

After the Jack Russell and Somerset shut in quick succession, residents face a long walk to St Clement’s for their nearest place to get together.

Susannah Wilson, one of a group who are attempting to re-open the Somerset as a community pub, said: “It used to be a real focus for the community but since it shut we’ve had nowhere to go, we do really miss it.

“To have no pubs at all is really sad – we are losing an important part of our culture.

“People become isolated, groups have nowhere to meet and you don’t get the chance to get to know your neighbours.”

The pub was listed as a heritage asset earlier this year, which campaigners hope will help stave off plans to change its use.

Fellow resident Wendy Twist said: “The impact of losing a pub is really massive and once it is gone, it is gone.

"My children have grown up and gone to university and I’d love somewhere to go and meet people the same as me.”
