A NEW hotel bedroom and rooftop terrace offering stunning views of Oxford will cost guests a small fortune - £1,000 a night.
Hotelier Jeremy Mogford said he is looking forward to opening the luxury addition at his five-star Old Bank Hotel in High Street in September.
Mr Mogford, who also runs Gees and The Old Parsonage, developed the Grade II listed former bank into a hotel in 1999.
He said: “We know it sounds brash but we are confident that this brand new luxury bedroom with its own private terrace will have one of the most exclusive and very best views in the world.
“This quintessential, iconic Oxford dreaming spires view cannot be enjoyed anywhere else in this city and our guests will be able to wake in the morning and, while lying in bed, simply press a button and the curtains will open to reveal huge minimalist picture window doors onto an exclusive terrace with an unparalleled, mesmerising view to truly die for.
“In front of your very eyes, close up, will be St Mary’s Church with its incredible steeple, All Souls College with its famous coat of arms, the Radcliffe Camera, the Sheldonian and Bodleian beyond, along with a roofscape which includes most other Oxford colleges and many spires, with a unique view up and down the length of the High with its 75 listed buildings.”
The Room With The View and terrace, measuring 52 sq m, will be the height of luxury with the latest touch screen technology.
It will be fully air conditioned with underfloor heating and a handmade Epoc Super King bed.
The £1,000 price tag for the rooftop hideaway is much higher than the usual cost of a room for two adults, which can be booked for about £350.
During the past two years a major renovation scheme has taken place and work has involved updating 13 bedrooms and public areas, including a new bar for Quod restaurant and a new kitchen.
Mr Mogford added: “I can’t wait until the beginning of September - it will be an absolutely special hotel room, offering the most unique view.”
“As part of our continued ‘refresh’ programme, having given 13 of our bedrooms; the hotel lobby; and residence Library a new updated look, work has commenced on our remaining bedrooms and public areas. This work will take place in small manageable stages, completing at the end of 2018, to add a modern feel to all of our bedroom categories.”
In 2015 entrepreneur Mr Mogford said a £1m makeover of the Old Bank was the ‘last piece of the jigsaw’ in an overhaul of his city properties.
When the building was converted in 1999 it was the first hotel to open in the centre for 135 years. Quod restaurant is decorated with Mr Mogford’s personal art collection.
