A MUCH-loved tree on Oxford High Street could have been dramatically damaged by the ongoing heatwave.
A member of staff at The University Church of Saint Mary the Virgin suggested soaring temperatures could have weakened the beloved almond tree outside its building - but it could also have been cut in half by a passing bus.
Saint Mary's tweeted on Friday that one branch of the tree, which has been photographed by tourists from around the world because of its pink blossom, had fallen down.
Fire crews quickly attended the scene and although they could not save what had already fallen, they prevented any further damage to the tree or church.
The church said it 'suffered a great loss'.
Now the Oxford Mail understands that the damage could be due to the persistent hot weather.
The almond tree has been there for decades, so the heat may have caused the iconic feature of the church to fatigue and then drop onto the High Street.
However, a member of church staff also said the branch could have been hit by a passing bus.
It is thought the church is now seeking a meeting with Oxford City Council to discuss possible further action.
