The high-profile protest against the airline industry unexpectedly spread its wings to Oxford yesterday.

Campaigners had pitched up at the Climate Camp on the edge of Heathrow airport over the weekend.

They wanted to make their voices heard about plans to expand the airport and warn about the threat of air travel to the globe.

But yesterday a group of activists moved on from the airport and headed to East Oxford and the base of Climate Care.

It is a firm which allows travellers to calculate the size of their carbon footprint using an online calculator.

The company gives you the chance to stump up a fee to pay for a range of projects, including renewable energy and reforestation schemes.

A rather unusual target, you might think.

Especially when you consider oil giant BP and the Leeds Bradford airport were also on the hit list.

But the campaigners claim the idea is a red herring, which has nil effect on the plant, although managers insist carbon offsetting is important to tackle emissions.

You have to wonder what the eco-warriors have achieved. Has it kick-started people into thinking about the environment?

I am betting when the dust has settled and protesters headed home - after just three hours in Oxford yesterday - people will soon forget.

When the lure of a cheap flight to Europe pops up any thoughts of personal responsibility for most will evaporate on a beach.

Asking people to sacrifice their overseas holiday, or business trip, is difficult and an almost unwinnable battle.
