Hurrah, at last, the city council is proposing to do something to improve its dated leisure facilities. We could even be getting a leisure pool with slides to rival those in other nearby towns and cities.

But, wait a minute, before we get too excited, here is the deputy leader of the council David Rundle talking about that vision thing. Yes, it could be ten years before it is operational.

To us, that sounds more like kite-flying than a serious proposal. If Oxford needs a decent leisure pool, and we believe strongly that it does, then let's go for it. That timescale should be halved at the very least.

We know the city council does not have a lot of money to spend. It is unlikely that will be any different in ten years. We could be sitting here in 2017 wondering whatever happened to our water park.

The city council should explore imaginative ways of making this happen. It does not need to build and operate this pool itself.

There are examples of successful, privately-run water complexes as good, if not better than the one envisaged by the council.

If there is a will, Oxford could have a family water park to beat anything for miles around
