FLAGS are flying across Oxford today to mark the centenary of the first women getting the right to vote.
It marks the 100th anniversary of the Representation of the People Act, which gave all men over 21 and some women over the age of 30 the vote.
Among women marking the occasion was Rabyah Khan, part of a team which helped to arrange for Suffragette flags to be flown at various locations across Oxford.
Ms Khan, who works at TORCH research centre, part of Oxford University’s humanities division, raised a flag at its offices off Woodstock Road.
She said: “The flag is purple, green and white, the colours used by the Women’s Social and Political Union.
"Flags are also being raised at the Town Hall, County Hall and at Oxford Castle.”
A flash mob to mark the anniversary will take place this evening at Carfax.
