WEEKS before the wedding of the century, Morland’s Brewery in Abingdon released a tipple fitting for a toast to the bride and groom-to-be.
In July 1981 the brewery brought out a special drink simply called the Royal Wedding, in tribute to Prince Charles and Princess – then Lady – Diana.
Pictured here, brewer Bill Mellor and bottling supervisor John Highsmith take a ceremonial sip.
The pale ale had a royal purple label with silver lettering and a scroll.
Available throughout July, it sold for the princely price tag of 45p per bottle.
It came just as Morrell’s in Oxford also released its own royal brew to mark the wedding, which took place on July 29.
In 2000, Morland’s was bought out by national chain Greene King.
