THE family of Oxford United’s 12th man Steve Dyer said a minute’s applause in his memory would be an ‘emotional moment’.

U’s fans have organised the gesture to celebrate the life of the 60-year-old, who died last month after a long battle with cancer.

Last year he flew over from America to watch the JPT final at Wembley despite being given just months to live.

His brother Phillip, who lives in Bicester, and will be at the game, said: “To hear the Oxford United fans applauding for Steve will be a very emotional moment. I was at the Scunthorpe game when they did a minute’s applause after his death, I broke down, he was a great guy. The fans have been fantastic towards him.”

Mr Dyer’s daughter Gemma said: “We want to thank everyone who has shown my dad the greatest amount of love and support throughout his journey.

“I know he would have loved to have been there tomorrow cheering on with you all – I’m sure we will all feel his presence.

“You have all helped my dad live out his dreams on becoming the 12th man.”
