Conservative Party leader David Cameron visited Oxfordshire County Council on Friday to launch a plan to cut the authority's carbon footprint.

County Hall wants to cut its current carbon footprint by 18 per cent in five years.

Calculations revealed the council currently produces 63,000 tonnes of carbon each year - with the main contributors being street lighting and community buildings.

Witney MP Mr Cameron visited the city to help launch the plan.

Council leader Keith Mitchell said cutting carbon emissions would lead to substantial financial savings.

But Green county councillor Craig Simmons said more action and fewer words were needed.

He said: "It will take more than a press stunt by Cameron to convince the Greens the Tories have the commitment to deliver substantive CO2 reductions."
