City councillor David Rundle suggests that his Liberal Democrat administration would look at local opinion in deciding which play areas will be shut (Oxford Mail, June 8).
This, with their reduced funding, will simply condemn those play areas marked for closure.
Shutting Girdlestone Road grassed area, as suggested in their report, is daft, shortsighted, and goes against local residents' wishes.
Residents appreciate the need for a place which allows children to exercise but which also benefits the local community.
I don't think it is a good enough response from the man on the spot.
It simply shouldn't be closed. I would invite the city council executive to agree rather than passing the buck.
JOE McMANNERS (Councillor), Churchill Ward, Oxford City Council
