CITIZENS Advice Oxford is calling on residents to return faulty electrical goods back to retailers this Christmas following new research.

Research from the national charity released on Monday has revealed that two thirds – 66 per cent, of people had a problem with a faulty electrical item in the last two years.

But 1 in 4 people were initially turned away by retailers when they tried to get a repair, replacement or refund despite the retailer having a responsibility to offer a solution.

The survey also showed that persistence paid off and 61 per cent of people turned away eventually got some form of solution from the retailer.

Director of citizens advice Oxford Al Bell said: “This Christmas people don’t need to be stuck with electrical goods that don’t work.

“We can all feel a little awkward about returning items but read out top tips guide to feel more confident about your rights in asking for a refund, replacement or repair, and if you need further help please don’t hesitate to get in touch.”

The charity’s top tips include: don’t fix the problem yourself in case of injury, return it to the retailer to help you solve the problem not the manufacturer.

If an item is unsafe stop using it immediately and unplug if applicable. Inform Trading Standards in case of a wider problem with similar products.

The call comes as part of National Consumer Week which begins today until December 4.
