A PUB was evacuated yesterday aftera tumble dryer caught fire in the cellar.

Three fire engines were sent to tackle the blaze at The Chequers Inn, Cassington.

Crews were faced with smoke billowing from the cellar and found the tumble dryer alight with clothes inside.

Incident commander watch manager Andy Hayes said: "The swift response and actions of the fire crews prevented the fire spreading further than the tumble dryer and its contents.

"Along with existing fire precautions in the premises such as fire doors and working smoke detectors allowed the occupier to evacuate, make a prompt call to the fire service and prevent the fire and smoke damage to other parts of the building."

It happened about 5.30pm, but the pub remained open as usual.
