A COLLABORATION between Oxford Brookes University researchers and the Soldiers of Oxfordshire Museum has led to a Great War exhibition moving to a new venue.

From Friday, The War Beyond the Western Front will display a series of artefacts from the Great War to reveal the experiences of soldiers in the Oxfordshire and Buckinghamshire Light Infantry.

The exhibition has been based at the Soldiers of Oxfordshire Museum in Woodstock since September and will transfer to the Headington university's Glass Tank at the Abercrombie building on Friday.

Displays are made up of research projects conducted by SOFO and Oxford Brookes staff, students and volunteers to explore personal histories found in the museum archives.

There are also artefacts on loan from the museum, and pictures converted to 3D images.

Tudor Georgescu, associate lecturer in History at Oxford Brookes University, said: "The exhibition aims to be an informal, engaging space in which to rediscover a remarkable perspective on the history of the First World War, and to encourage a conversation about what it means to us during the centenary commemorations and beyond."

He added that the 12-month link-up with staff and volunteers at the military museum in Woodstock stemmed from his work with the Centre for Hidden Histories at Nottingham University, which funded the collaboration through the centre’s Research Development Fund.

Vicki Wood, education and outreach officer at SOFO, said: "We were delighted to work with staff and students from Brookes on The War Beyond The Western Front.

"It clearly reveals that the First World War extended way beyond the Western Front, told through the stories of different soldiers."

Dr Georgescu added: "The aim was to encourage collaboration between academics and local community groups, and the work with the Soldiers of Oxfordshire Museum has been incredibly rewarding in that sense, having allowed us to support conservation training for museum volunteers, organise public lectures, and support 14 individual research projects.

"These are the centrepiece of the exhibition and reveal truly fascinating personal stories of local soldiers and their experiences of the war.

"The exhibition, which will remain in the Glass Tank for five weeks, will also showcase not only the research done at SOFO but reflect how the war’s visual and material legacies can offer a fun and engaging route to reaching wide audiences.

"In that sense 3D pictures converted from the originals are a really fantastic way to open up an otherwise rather overlooked aspect of the First World War, and an example of how to reinvent and re-contextualise a remarkable set of sources."

The Soldiers of Oxfordshire Museum in Woodstock is the home of archive material for the Oxfordshire and Buckinghamshire Light Infantry and The Queen's Own Oxfordshire Hussars.

The SOFO museum also has an exhibition entitled Dads' Armies, which focuses on the amateur military tradition in Buckinghamshire.

The exhibition at Brookes University's runs until December 16.
