Sir - I am grateful to your newspaper for having interested itself in the Masterplan that the University of Oxford is now preparing for what used to be the Radcliffe Infirmary Site.

When I was an undergraduate at the University, my studies included John Milton. I learned that "when complaints are freely heard, deeply consider'd and speedily reform'd, then is the utmost bound of civill liberty attain'd, that wise men looke for."

The story that you ran (June 8) allowed a voice on behalf of our building to begin to be freely heard. Our complaints have now to be deeply considered by the University and its draft masterplan has to be speedily reformed.

People like those who taught me will find nothing controversial in the requirement that the setting of our building should be preserved and enhanced. Its listed status and the rules for determining planning applications require that respect - as does its history and the beauty and interest of its architecture and art.

Anyone wishing to learn more about the FREUD building and our concerns can obtain a copy of the response to the draft Masterplan, which we submitted to the University and the City Council, by sending a request to RadcliffeMasterplanResponse@freud.eu or by telephoning 01865 311171.
