IT was a hat-trick for one Oxford United fan at the weekend as he celebrated his team’s win, said 'I do' to the love of his life and enjoyed a surprise U's themed wedding day.
Holding his blushing bride, Karina's hand, Robbie Baughan, cheered “come on you yellows” as they left St James' Church in Aston on Saturday afternoon as husband and wife.
But while the wedding was planned, the groom was unaware his new wife had an Oxford United wedding surprise for him.
Knowing her husband-to-be was such a yellows fan, the now Mrs Baughan got her five page boys to wear the yellow and blue football strip while the flowers were also the same colour. The eight bridesmaids were also in yellow and blue.
Delighted with the surprise, the 42-year-old said: “I couldn’t believe it.
“I’m such a fan – I normally work on a Saturday but I always have the radio on.
“This has been such a brilliant day and I could not think of someone I would rather spend it with than Karim.
“I really hope the boys can win today – come on you yellows!”
As the newlyweds left the church Oxford United were taking on Peterborough at the Kassam Stadium, where they won 2-1.
Upon leaving the church, one of the first things he asked what the score was.
Mrs Baughan's eight bridesmaids were also in yellow and blue.
But their wedding was not all about football as the couple, who live in Cassington, wanted to get married at the Aston church as a gesture to Mr Baughan’s mum and nan.
The painter and decorator said: “It was Karim’s wonderful idea to be honest.
“My mum, Pamela, passed away from cancer and we moved away from Aston when I was 13.
“She and my nan are buried here so we wanted to get married so they could be a part of the day.
“Tomorrow morning we will lay all the bouquets on their graves, which I think will be a nice touch.”
The 180 guest wedding party all piled onto a yellow and blue double decker bus to take them off to the reception at Cassington Playing Fields.
The couple, who have been together for 19 months, were presented their wedding rings by their black Jack Russell, Ernie, who even wore a matching Oxford United blue bow tie.
The new Mrs Baughan, 36, said: “It was a really nice touch for us.
“We did decide that the colour would be yellow and blue but I kept all the boys' kit a secret.
"Robbie is such a big fan and we wanted it to be a part of our day."
The couple have yet to decide where to go on their honeymoon.
