D-DAY war hero and decorated veteran Bill Adams has urged the people of Oxfordshire not to waste their vote today.
The 91-year-old said he would be voting to leave the EU today but encouraged the public to get to the polls and back the government whatever the outcome.
The Bicester man said: “It’s important people do vote and whatever way the result goes we should back the government moving forward.
“I, alongside many others, fought for this country and many of my friends died for us to be able to govern ourselves and make our own decisions.”
As a 19-year-old private on D-Day, Bill Adams served with the 1st Buckinghamshire Battalion of the Oxfordshire and Buckinghamshire Light Infantry.
Earlier this year he was awarded a medal for his bravery – the Legion d’Honneur medal, the highest decoration in France.
Mr Adams said he would be voting to leave the EU and expected many other war veterans to follow suit.
He said: “I don’t want to be governed by Europe, I love this country and we can stand on our own two feet – we have done it before and we can do it again.
“I have nothing against the other European countries but we have fought twice to protect our country and govern ourselves and we should vote leave.
“I would imagine many other veterans of my generation will vote the same way.”
