Three fire engines were rushed to a shed in Abingdon on Wednesday following reports of a rapidly-developing fire.
Two vehicles from Oxford and one from Abingdon were mobilised after a call at 4.26pm with crews on the scene within minutes.
On arrival at the scene in Norris Close, crews were faced with a large fire in a garden shed that was quickly spreading to a nearby detached house. The fire had already taken hold of the roof of the property.
Firefighters wearing breathing apparatus entered the property and used firefighting jets and a positive pressure fans to quickly extinguish the fire.
The property and a neighbouring one were both empty at the time and Thames Valley Police and fire investigators are currently trying to establish the cause of the fire.
Incident Commander Watch Manager Kevin Kerry said: “This was a very serious fire and we would take this opportunity to remind people that small fires can spread quickly.
"Although on this occasion the property was unoccupied, the smoke alarms were actuating and would have raised the alarm, giving the residents time to evacuate and call the fire service”.
