ONE hundred people packed into Clifton Hampden village hall to hear campaigners object to a quarry application that would "desecrate" the countryside.
Anti-quarry group, BACHPORT - Burcot and Clifton Hampden for the protection of the River Thames - lead the discussions last Wednesday on the application for Fullamoor Quarry.
The application submitted to Oxfordshire County Council would see Hills Quarry Products extract sand and gravel over ten years.
Bachport chairman Ian Mason said: "Our goal is to get this application rejected but we can’t do it without the support of the public.
"We urge you to send your concerns to the county council to stop this appalling plan.
"It will desecrate a peaceful part of the countryside and there will be long-term implications for communities."
Abingdon Town Council's planning committee also opposes the quarry plan over concerns about the impact of heavy lorries travelling through Abingdon's congested centre.
But Monique Hayes, a spokesperson for the Hills group, said: "As part of this application, Hills is looking to contribute funding towards some highway improvement works near the traffic lights at Clifton Hampden."
This Friday the campaign group will start its traffic survey from 2.30pm at Clifton Hampden and will be joined by MP John Howell.

The county's consultation on the application ends on Friday, May 13.
