I AGREE with Laurence Hughes (Oxford Mail, February 23) about the unsatisfactory nature of Oxford Central Library’s proposed move to the Castle quarter.

When I complained to the library about the limitations of the temporary home, I was told that the arrangements were unavoidable and decisions concerning this move have been subject to a bigger commercial agreement and have been outside the control of the Library Service while the main shopping centre is being redeveloped. When I asked for some elaboration on the “bigger commercial agreement” I got no answer.

I was also told rather mysteriously that Oxfordshire County Council and the Westgate Oxford Alliance are working together to achieve a suitable relocation for the Central Library so that it can be available to the public. Perhaps someone from one or both of these organisations would care to say if in fact there are any plans to remedy the situation?

I find it ironic that in a city which boasts 98 university libraries, there will not be a satisfactory central library for residents and visitors for the next year and a half.
