A FESTIVAL that raises awareness of human rights and conflicts through the arts was back at Oxford Brookes University for its 14th year.

The event was organised by students from the Development and Emergency Practice and Applied Architectural Design masters programmes as well as BA Film Studies students.

The centrepiece of the free festival at the university's Headington Campus was an exhibition entitled Women in Adversity, which featured handcrafted pieces by women from refugee camps in Gaza, the Palestinian History Tapestry and the Keiskamma Tapestry.

A key part of the event from February 10-13 was Veronica Cordova De La Rosa's performance art piece, which included 20 minutes of red numbers pouring from the roof above into the Glasshouse gallery.

Prior to studying at the university, Ms Cordova De La Rosa was in Barcelona doing an artist residency.

She said: "For the past three years I have been a distant but attentive witness of the violent situation in Mexico.

"I could have chosen to ignore it, yet the information has been overwhelming.

"As a result, I feel the need to express my thoughts through the language of performative actions."

Featuring a selection of films, animations and workshops, the festival "took audiences on a journey that highlighted issues of women in adversity, environmental problems and climate change, perils of fleeing from war and issues closer to home".

The 2015 film, ‘Suffragette’, starring Helen Bonham Carter and Meryl Streep, was also introduced by Sarah Gavron, director of the film.
