RUNNERS can sign up to this year's Vitality Oxford Half Marathon which will see the event start and finish in the city centre for a second time in its history.

A date of October 9 has been set for the 13.1-mile run, which saw thousands of people start and finish in St Giles', and experience the iconic and historical sites of the city last year.

Organisers have set their sights on the half marathon becoming a mainstay on the running calendar to rival the likes of Paris and Berlin, with 2015's new course deemed a resounding success.

Race organisers Jamie Warren said: "We saw a phenomenal level of interest in the half marathon.

"Entries sold fast leading to a sell-out race, particularly after announcing the key route changes to incorporate the city centre and all the famous landmarks that are synonymous with Oxford.

"These tweaks made a huge difference to the race day atmosphere. The city section provided the perfect course profile for runners to find a good rhythm and really get into their stride, plus it also encouraged thousands of spectators to line the streets to cheer on friends and family like never before."

This year, all runners will receive a free finishers t-shirt from race partner, Brooks, a medal and goody bag on race day.

The Oxford United football community trust has been named as an official partner for the half marathon.

The trust, a registered charity, aims to provide the people of Oxfordshire with a development pathway at all levels and ages in football.

Oxford City Council board member for sports Mark Lygo said he was pleased to see the marathon come back for a sixth year.

Last year saw Mr Lygo take part in the run on crutches after he severely damaged his knee ligaments just weeks before the race.

He added: "I shall be participating again on October 9 and I look forward working with the organisers to ensure this one is the most successful ever."
