BURGLARS who stole sentimental jewellery from the widow of stabbing victim Justin Skrebowski are thought to have targeted five other homes the same night.

Thieves clambered in through Gulsen Alkan's conservatory roof in Buckler Road on January 21, little more than a month after her 61-year-old husband was stabbed to death in Abingdon's Poundland

Police revealed today that burglars hit five other North Oxford families that night in a crime spree.

Connie Primmer, spokeswoman for Thames Valley Police, confirmed nearby homes in Sunderland Avenue, Davenant Road and Mere Road, and two in Rosamund Road were also burgled in what police think are linked crimes.

The burglary, which happened between 4pm and 7pm, was the second devestating blow to Mrs Alkan, who turned 39 on December 7 - the day antiques dealer Mr Skrebowski was attacked in the Bury Street store.

Trevor Joyce, 36, of Franklyn Close in Abingdon, has been charged with murder.

Investigating officer PC Chris Cassidy said he was "determined to bring the perpetrator to justice", adding that there was no evidence suggestion the murder and the burglary were linked.

He said: "This was already a terrible time for the victim, who is trying to carry on with her life after losing her husband in such a horrible way.

"To then be the victim of a burglary such a short time later, where someone broke into her home - where she and her young children should feel safe - searched it and stole jewellery and other precious items, is heartbreaking.

"These items had huge sentimental value as they were family heirlooms from her husband’s family and were being kept to give to their children when they grew up.

"I am urging anyone with any information, no matter how insignificant you feel it is, to come forward and help us to find who stole these items and get them back to the victim, who has already gone through so much."

Anyone with information can contact the police on 101.
