If their online shopping habits are anything to go by, students at Oxford and Oxford Brookes Universities are among the fittest in the country.

Between pints in The Bear, those infamous Oxford dinners and midnight kebab-van chips, figures from online retail giant Amazon students in the city are the second most likely in the country to splash out on exercise equipment.

Exercise bars to perform pull-ups, dumbbell sets to tone arms and Fitbit wristbands and 'smartbands' to track exercise are reportedly selling like hot cakes in the area through the Amazon Student service.

To anyone familiar with Oxford's long-standing connection to sport, with alumni such as Roger Bannister to its name, the news won't come as a surprise.

But it may be somewhat galling to learn that Oxford was only bested to the top spot by Cambridge students.

The website has suggested that more students than ever are focusing on both brains and brawn, and shelling out on equipment and accessories to make it happen.

Amazon Student spokesman Paul Bagstaff said: "There is a new wave of health-conscious students who are working towards a healthy body and a healthy mind.

"This attitude is influencing the types of products students are buying with one-day delivery through Amazon Student, with fitness products playing a big part in university life."
