An Oxford kebab house is in the running for one of the industry's top gongs in the British Kebab Awards.

Bodrum Kebab House in Cowley Road has been shortlisted in the Best Kebab Restaurant Outside London category.

And only last year, the restaurant was nominated for Best Takeaway Outside of London award.

Manager Hasan Asam has been working at the restaurant for nearly 10 years.

Ibrahim Dogus, founder of the British Kebab Awards, said: "Now in their fourth year, the British Kebab Awards are going from strength to strength.

"It is fantastic that we have this opportunity to recognise the work of businesses across the country, as well as highlight how varied the British kebab industry is, and the important contribution it makes to the economy.”

Kebabs are now considered to be a British institution with an estimated 1.3m sold every day after the first kebab shop opened in 1966.

There are now over 20,000 kebab outlets in the UK selling around 2,500 tonnes of lamb aned chicken doner a week.

As a result, categories in the British Kebab Awards range from Best Takeaway to Best Restaurant and even Best Fine Dining experience.

A judging panel including MPs Nadhim Zahawi and Keith Vaz will decide the winners in each category at a VIP-studded ceremony on March 23 at London’s Park Plaza Westminster Bridge Hotel.

Graham Corfield, UK Managing Director of awards sponsor JUST EAT, said: “The kebab industry has a special place in the nation’s hearts, yet let’s not forget the phenomenal economic contribution it makes to the UK as well.

“With more and more consumers craving choice and healthy options, the kebab industry has continued to deliver.

"We’re proud to work alongside restaurants in the kebab industry, and help them build on generations of hard work and passion.”

Mr Asam was unavailable to comment.
