More than half of people who voted in an Oxford Mail poll said they liked the plans for a 'lantern' on top of the redeveloped Westgate Shopping Centre.
Of 748 votes cast 422, or 56 per cent, were in favour of the four-metre high stainless steel lantern which would feature 78 glass panels in nine different shades.
A further 326 votes were against the proposals for the structure, which would light up at night.
Oxford Mail readers were given the chance to vote on the design after it was revealed yesterday.
The plans are part of the £440m redevelopment of the centre which is due to be finished in autumn 2017.
