Twenty witty clues for all the family to enjoy Oxford and its treasures is the attraction this Sunday.
The Oxford Family Treasure Hunt is a circular trail that will take around a couple of hours to complete. The event is raising funds for muscular dystrophy.
Organiser Jane Byam Shaw said: "I live on the doorstep of one of the world's most glorious cities yet I spend more time exploring the aisles of my local supermarket than appreciating Oxford's hidden treasures.
"I'm sure many others feel the same, so this summer expedition around the city is a wonderful opportunity for families to explore its hidden treasures, while raising much-needed funds for the charity."
The money raised will go to specialist centres, funded by the Muscular Dystrophy Campaign, the Oxford Nerve and Muscle Centre at the John Radcliffe Hospital and the Oxford University genetic research unit.
No special knowledge of Oxford or its history is necessary. As they walk around, families will learn about architectural and archaeological wonders, scientific breakthroughs, mythical creatures, real people and gruesome events.
The 'treasures' are to be found around the circular route. Felicity Tholstrup, of Hidden Oxford, has created witty clues which are crafted in rhyming couplets. Two sample clues are: Down Dead Man's Walk you go and soon You will read of a man who launched a balloon.
Like the colour of the sky to which he flew, His name is written on a plaque of blue.
Designed by Hooke, made law by Boyle What pump was made here in scientific toil?
Felicity said: "I particularly enjoy the challenge of researching and undertaking walks and visits that are tailor-made to the interests, age and needs of each group or individual.
"I have recently arranged the following tours: Pre-Reformation silver in college collections; college tradition and ceremony; the making of the Oxford English Dictionary; Leaders of Oxford; Oxford University spin-off companies; Science and Discovery in Oxford."
Frank Webster, of sponsors Finders Keepers, said: "We are also promoting the treasure hunt. Anyone wanting information or an entry form can call in to our agents in Summertown, St Clement's or Park End Street."
The cost is £10 for children, £20 for adults, while a family ticket costs £40.
It starts between 10.30am and 12.30pm at Keble Gate in the University Parks. To book call 01865 310215.
